Using data to improve student retention and raise student outcomes

Concurrent Session 8

Brief Abstract

The ability to access your data in a meaningful way can be the launch pad for your school’s action plan. Allow us to share with you several insights and reports based on years of best practice from industry leaders that can make data-driven decisions possible.

Presenters

Prior to joining the Bocavox team in 2020, Ari Nemser spent nearly 10 years in education. First, as a music teacher with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, serving the fourth largest district in the country. Following his graduate degree in education he continued his work as a District Curriculum Support Specialist and Administrator supporting schools in all three regions of Miami-Dade County. This support included a strong focus on STEAM integration, developing robust ways of integrating disciplines through PBL and finding meaningful ways to make connections between school projects and the world around them outside of the school walls. When the pandemic hit, Ari was on the front lines for Miami-Dade County Public Schools with the transition to fully remote learning where he developed and rolled out virtual arts curriculum to support teachers across the district in both curriculum and technology, supporting a successful transition to distance learning. Concurrently, he was an adjunct professor at Florida International University where he taught an undergraduate course in Inclusive Teaching Practices for Special Learners in the Music Classroom and served as the undergraduate music education advisor for students in their teaching internships. Ari's academic research focuses on the impact of distinct learning environments, with emphasis on 'communities of practice'. His research is published in the official music education journal for the State of Florida and he has presented at state, national, and international conferences; a highlight being his trip to Porto Alegre, Brazil in 2014 where he presented to academics from over 20 different countries at the ISME international music education conference.

Extended Abstract

Learn about the possibilities of querying data in a myriad of ways to help support programs, initiatives, and operational changes at your institution. The ability to access your data in a meaningful way can be the launch pad for your school’s action plan. We will share how to leverage your data, approaching it from multiple entry points with a methodical and logical process. Uncover the academic holes in your student population and efficiently identify where retention issues exist and also may arise before they do. Allow us to share with you several insights and reports based on years of best practice from industry leaders that can make data-driven decisions possible. We’ll highlight common challenges that schools face such as identifying at-risk students, executing effective communication plans, and knowing where to inject resources.
