5 Keys to Change: facing and embracing innovative evolution

Concurrent Session 7
Leadership

Brief Abstract

Innovative technologies can bring exciting changes and evolutionary improvements! But that can be a hard sell to learners, educators, administrators, community, and even yourself. The goal of this session is to bring together a community of practice in which we can learn from each other to create a shareable takeaway.

Presenters

Dr. Allison Hall is the Director of Learning Experience Design in the University Technology Office at ASU. Allison works with the Learning Experience team to bridge the gap between the future of learning and how to bring these practices to scale for all learners.

Extended Abstract

These past two years have seen technologically supported educational change unlike any other in recent history. The ways we respond to change, planned or unexpected, have a direct impact on the ability of ourselves and the communities we serve to thrive. How to responsibly and ethically respond to change in a thoughtful manner is most difficult when we are under pressure. For the higher education IT community, we need to use what we have experienced and learned over the past year to improve our practice as we develop products, deliver services and continue to support the evolution of education through the use of emerging technologies. Human-centered design is key to the sustainability and success of change. The goal of this session is to bring together a community of practice in which we can learn from each others’ experiences to create a shareable resource that will continue to grow beyond our time in this conference session. While this does seem like an ambitious effort for a single conference session, it supports the mission of Educause to advance higher education by helping those who shape strategic decisions at every level.

In the course of this facilitated discussion, I will share the 5 mindsets and strategies that I use to support the teaching and learning community that I serve:

#1 Let go - Acknowledging and embracing the 5 stages of grief that exist in the change management process.

#2 Know your learners - Who are the learners? What do they need? How are you collecting their perspectives? How are you including them in the process? How are you ensuring everyone is included?

#3 Focus on learning - Identify key learning goals. Use Universal Design for Learning to create successful learning experiences for all learners.

#4 Use your team - Identify your support systems, your advocates, your skeptics

#5 Change +1 - Don’t try to change everything all at once. Take one step at a time.

This session will actively engage the participants through the use of digital collaborative learning tools to share their own experiences and strategies to answer the following questions:

How can we face letting go of what no longer serves us to embrace the new and unknown? How can we honor and respect the lessons of the past while moving forward with change? How can we confidently make the choice toward massive change? What do you do when change finds you? How do you actively listen to and support the communities that are directly and indirectly impacted?
