Designing Course Blueprints for Multiple formats: Online or Blended, Varying Course Lengths

Concurrent Session 7

Session Materials

Brief Abstract

Cut down on your maintenance load by keeping all of your content in one place for multiple modalities and term lengths. Come benefit from some best practices we’ve discovered for effectively managing courses within the blueprint model!

Presenters

Eric Orton is an instructional designer with BYU's Division of Continuing Education, working on BYU Online semester-based courses. He previously worked in instructional design and faculty development at both Boise State University and the University of Iowa. He holds a B.S. in Elementary Education from BYU and a Master’s in Instructional Technology from Utah State University. Outside of work, Eric can be found hitting softballs, hunting and fishing, or skiing, depending on the season.

Extended Abstract

Instructional Designers often manage a large portfolio of courses and, in many cases, those courses may be taught in multiple modalities (e.g., fully online, blended) and in different term lengths (e.g., 8 or 15 weeks). It can be challenging to keep up with tweaks and changes to course content, accessibility compliance, and the like.  In this session, we will share and discuss with you our strategies for

  • Combining fully online, blended, semester-length, and term-length courses into a single blueprint.

  • Keeping blueprinted courses flexible for faculty.

  • Streamlining compliance processes (e.g., course accessibility, copyright compliance).

  • Communicating best practices for handling blueprint courses across your instructional design team and to your faculty.

By attending this session, you’ll come away with a handy job aid for effectively implementing the blueprint process and an opportunity to ask us questions about how our team is succeeding with this approach.
