Extended Abstract

A post-pandemic survey conducted by the Director at Bay View Analytics showed that about 68% of students prefer and expect to have flexible learning options moving forward. Students are demanding hybrid learning and testing options. In order to meet those demands, online proctoring has become the standard technology at many higher education institutions, but it doesn’t come without its unique challenges, including how to incorporate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in online environments.

Honorlock has taken a deeper dive into DEI in online learning and remote assessments through the development of an eBook in order to answer: “How do we overcome the challenges of establishing and using DEI in online learning?”  We found there are three important points to consider:

  1. Developing diverse, equitable, and inclusive online courses

  2. Creating accessible online courses

  3. Connecting with students in an online learning environment

Vivian Springer, VP of People at Honorlock, and Jordan Adair, VP of Product at Honorlock, will guide you through tips on creating course designs that keep DEI at the forefront, walk you through the meaning of Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust (POUR) principles and how it impacts accessibility in online courses, and best practices for making yourself approachable and human to your students in a virtual environment. After we discuss the basic principles of establishing and using DEI in online learning, Vivian will discuss how Honorlock as a company supports DEI in our culture and how those same practices can be applied at your institution.

As you walk away from our session, you will have a clearer picture of:

  • How to overcome the challenges of establishing and using DEI in online learning

  • Ways to use DEI in online courses to improve student engagement

  • How your institution can adopt a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion

As an audience member, you will participate in a short (approximately 5 minute) facilitated group discussion on DEI at your institutions. We will pose questions:

  • What are you doing to create a culture that supports diversity, equity, and inclusion?

  • What can you learn from your fellow attendees about their approach and their findings at their institution?

We will also have periodic polls throughout the session to better understand the challenges your institution is facing in establishing DEI in online learning.
