Brief Abstract

Presentation skills are paramount to any instructor but how many have actually received training on public speaking essentials?  Having a PhD doesn't make you a great speaker/presenter. Join Dr. Jory Basso for an evocative discussion on how to improve your presentation skills and create better student engagement and connectedness.

Presenters

Jory Basso, a Canadian from the Toronto area, decided at age four that he wanted to be a scientist. As a very active child he played multiple sports and suffered many injuries. In high school after recovering from knee surgery (the first of four) his passion was ignited in helping people achieve their health/fitness goals. He graduated from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) as a Doctor of Chiropractic and holds a Master of Education in Digital Learning from Ontario Tech University. He played an important role in helping SCU rapidly pivot to digital/online learning formats during the covid pandemic and trains faculty on best teaching practices. His undergraduate studies include a BSc in Biological Sciences from the University of Guelph specializing in Human Kinetics and a Sports Injury Management Diploma from Sheridan College. He served as a sports therapist/team trainer in addition to providing patient care in multidisciplinary medicine clinics and was certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). Dr. Basso founded Hybrid Health and Fitness, an integrative health clinic in downtown Toronto in 2007. A few years later he was teaching biological sciences courses in the Pre-Health Sciences department at George Brown College. As a very passionate educator he has published over 90 original articles on his health blog and creates educational YouTube videos on the channel ‘HybridDrJ’, with a vision to help the world improve their health and fitness. His 100+ videos have garnered close to 1 million views. He has TV appearances including CBC's The National, CTV News, and Dr. Marla & Friends and has presented at major corporations including Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Scotiabank, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, and multiple educational conferences including the Online Learning Consortium. In 2019 he sold his Toronto integrative health practice moving the family to Southern California realizing a lifelong dream to teach, live near the ocean, and enjoy the outdoor lifestyle including hiking, cycling, and surfing.

Even veteran faculty members may not be communicating or presenting at the best of their ability. Now that many lectures and labs have moved online speaking and presentation skills are even more crucial to keep your students engaged. Because of this new reality, instructors and students alike may feel disconnected during online delivery. Join Dr. Jory Basso for an evocative discussion on how to improve your presentation skills and create better student engagement and connectedness.

Dr. Basso is an Associate Professor and Acting Faculty Lead at Southern California University of Health Sciences and teaches Clinical Nutrition and Human Biochemistry at the graduate level. He built a successful integrative health clinic as a Chiropractor/Sports Therapist in downtown Toronto prior to moving his family to California to teach full-time and occasionally surf. Dr. Basso has presented educational content at corporations, international conferences including OLC’s Ideate STEM Labs, served as a health/fitness expert on TV, author of 90+ blog articles and creator of 90+ videos for the HybridDrJ YouTube channel. He has a Doctor of Chiropractic Degree, a Master of Education in Digital Learning, and is passionate about empowering individuals with health and science education.
