Brief Abstract

Presenters

Fred Dixon is the project manager for BigBlueButton, an open source web conferencing system for online learning. The goal of the project is to enable remote students to have a high-quality online learning experience. Fred also moonlights as the CEO of Blindside Networks.

Extended Abstract

In its 17 sustainable development goals (SDG), UNESCO lists education as goal #4, and access to quality education -- regardless of where one lives in the world -- underpins the other 16 goals.

We need to achieve a world where every student can learn from a great teacher, and, in doing so, help students raise themselves, their community, and ultimately achieve the 17 SDGs.  The BigBlueButton project is focused on building the next-generation of virtual classrooms.  BigBlueButton itself is an open source project built by teachers, for teachers, and is freely available to anyone in the world to setup and use.

This proposal will showcase the latest developers in BigBlueButton -- both our vision for the next-generation of virtual classrooms, and our implementation of that vision today.

BigBlueButton came to the forefront during the pandemic. For example, in 2020, around 500,000 users in the German state of Baden-Württemberg switched to BigBlueButton as their virtual classroom. That number represents one-third of all the teachers and pupils in the state. They did this all with open source solutions built around BigBlueButton.

Today, the French Ministry of Education is building an infrastructure to support over 500,000 online teachers and students using BigBlueButton.

And Moodle 4.0, the world's most popular LMS, recently integrated BigBlueButton built into the core of Moodle.  The BigBlueButton integration now ships with Moodle 4.0, making it easy for any school using Moodle to have an integrated virtual classroom.   Thanks to its global community, BigBlueButton is now localized into over 55 languages and has strong support for Accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA with some limitations).

Those who attend will feel inspired by BigBlueButtons growth and potential, and learn about its plans to build the next generation of virtual classrooms and make it freely available to every teacher and educational instution in North America and the world.

This presentation will be given by Fred Dixon, the Product Manager for BigBlueButton Inc.
