2 Tools in D2L to enhance the 3 Cs: Consistency, Clarity, and Check-ins

In this brief video, an instructional designer and a D2L consultant team up to illustrate how the use of two tools in the D2L learning management system can create a more learner-centered class through the three Cs of consistency, clarity, and weekly check-ins.

Research has illustrated that online instruction adds “another level of cognitive loading” to students as they must figure out how to navigate within their LMS (Scutelnicu et. al, 2019).  Miller (2012) found that by creating courses that are simple to navigate and understand, instructors can increase engagement, completion, and success by students. The highly regarded Quality Matters rubric includes clarity and consistency in Standard 8.1.  In other words, creating a class that is easy to navigate with clear and consistent instructions positively influences student outcomes.

In this brief video, you will learn how an instructional designer and a D2L consultant collaborated to increase the clarity and consistency of an online learning environment through the use of the D2L tool  - checklists.  We further offer faculty a simple and easy way to increase student engagement while gauging student understanding of the material through weekly ungraded brief surveys.  Participants will leave with an overview of the strategies used to create an easy to navigate, learner-centered course template used for by a department for its online courses.  Participants will also gain directions on how to create a survey in D2L and examples of multiple ways the survey tool can be used to 1) gauge student understanding, 2) create more student engagement, 3) increase inclusion and diversity, and 4) check on student well-being as well as ways to incorporate this idea outside of the LMS.  Participants will also receive web links to the slideshow and a blog about utilizing surveys.
